Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario
Our beginnings start with a group of visionary physicians and
researchers creating the first National Foundation in 1952 with a
$250,000 government grant from the province of Ontario.
Our Mission
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is a national voluntary non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of Canadians by preventing and reducing disability and death from heart disease and stroke through research, health promotion and advocacy. 7
Research
- Through its new strategic Heart and Stroke Foundation Research Fund, the Foundation will invest $24 million over five years to partner with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and other health research funding agencies to support innovative research initiatives aimed at building linkages across disciplines and advancing knowledge of heart disease and stroke.
- In 2004, the Heart and Stroke Foundation invested over $51 million into peer-reviewed heart disease and stroke research in Canada.
- Since it was established in 1956, the Foundation has funded more than $887 million in research support.
- Canadian research has helped pioneer diagnostic techniques, medical treatments and surgical advances that save lives every year.
- The Foundation funds the full spectrum of health research ranging from molecular biology to population health.
- Through its personnel awards program, the Foundation provides almost $8 million annually to support young Canadian heart and stroke researchers.
As heart and stroke-related diseases continue to touch so many lives, your financial support also continues to grow and reach new milestones in supporting research with a cumulative total of more than half a billion dollars since 1955.
